Lesson 2

Prancing Pegasi

Pegasi are magical flying horses. Magic is crucial for them, because horses weigh at least 800 pounds (362 kilograms), so keeping them aloft requires much more than mere strength and favorable wind currents! In most cases, pegasi have large, feathery wings and can come in a variety of colors, though they are often portrayed as white horses.

Greek Mythology
Pegasus: According to Greek myth, Pegasus was born when Perseus beheaded Medusa. He is the offspring of Poseidon, who was actually with Medusa before she became Snake Lady. He was a large, white, winged horse that carried Perseus to slay the sea monster (sometimes called the kraken) and to rescue Andromeda. After his escapades with Perseus, Pegasus was invited to Mt. Olympus and carried thunder and lightning for Zeus, until he was captured by Bellerophon. He and Bellerophon slayed the chimera and had other adventures together.
There is an interesting legend concerning Pegasus. According to the Greeks, where his hoof struck the earth, a spring appeared. One famous spring is the Hippocrene, or 'horse spring.' He was also referred to as the Horse of the Muses, and when he died, Zeus placed him in the night sky as a constellation.
Although in mythology Pegasus is always white, The 2010 movie Clash of the Titans (a remake of the 1981 version) decided to make Pegasus black, taking inspiration from the friesian horse.

The Chronicles of Narnia
, C.S. Lewis

Strawberry/Fledge: In The Magician's Nephew, Strawberry was a red chestnut horse who pulled a cab in London, until he was transported into a forest with many pools. He drank from a pool of water that took him to Narnia. While Aslan is finishing creating Narnia, he transforms Strawberry into a talking horse. He remains in Narnia, and later, Aslan gives Strawberry wings to take Polly and Digory to retrieve the silver apple. Aslan also renames him Fledge. He becomes the Father of Flying Horses and lives the rest of his life in Narnia, free and happy.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians
, Rick Riordan

The pegasi in this series are heavily influenced by Greek mythology, as are the rest of the magical creatures. Pegasus is the father and king of the pegasi, which is the plural form of pegasus, but Riordan uses it in the singular... Anyway, Pegasus is white with blue eyes, but his offspring are more colorful.
Blackjack: A black pegasi, who is exceptionally friendly and laid back. He dispenses with formalities and even refers to Dionysus as 'the wine dude,' in addition to calling Percy 'boss,' instead of 'lord,' as is befitting a son of Poseidon. Blackjack and his friends fly Percy and his friends on their missions, even bringing them to Mt. Olympus in the final novel.
He first appears in The Sea of Monsters after he escapes imprisonment from Luke's ship, the Princess Andromeda (I hope you caught the parallel to Greek myth). Percy rescues him and earns his loyalty.
Guido: A white pegasi and friend of Blackjack. Though not as prominent as Blackjack, he does help transport Percy's friends on their missions, including to Mt. Olympus.
Porkpie: Another white pegasi, friend of Blackjack and Guido, who helps transport Percy's friends.

Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling
J.K. Rowling took her pegasi from various mythologies, including Roman, Greek, and Norse. Additionally, she created her own winged horse that seems to be influenced by some variants of Thanatos' (Death's) steed.
Abraxan: The giant, palomino flying horses bred by Madame Maxime. They are sentient creatures with golden coats, a white mane and tail, blue wings, and black eyes. They are native to France and pull Beauxbatons' flying carriage. Extremely powerful horses, they drink only single malt whiskey and require a firm hand, hence why Hagrid is charged with looking after them during the Triwizard Tournament. The Ministry of Magic classifies the abraxan as XX-XXXXX.
Rowling probably used Abraxas, one of Aurora's horses as inspiration. Aurora is the Roman goddess of the dawn, so the abraxans' golden coat is fitting.

Aethonan: Sentient, chestnut-colored flying horses native to Great Britain and Ireland. The Ministry classifies them as XX-XXXXX. The aethonan was inspired by Aethon, one of the hoses that pulled Helios' chariot. Helios is the Greek god of the sun.
Granian: Sentient, gray flying horses that are exceptionally fast. The Ministry classifies them as XX-XXXXX. They were probably inspired by Grani, a horse that could run faster than the wind. Grani, which means 'gray' in Norse, was owned by Sigurd, and was the foal of Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse.

Thestral: Probably J.K. Rowling's coolest creature, thestrals are black, skeletal flying horses with leathery skin. Instead of the graceful, feathery wings, their wings are bat-like. Their faces are reptilian (e.g., beaked mouth) but still retain very equine features. All of this, combined with their milky-white eyes, gives the thestral a chilling appearance. They are carnivorous and possess fangs with which they snare prey, but they don't attack humans unless they feel threatened.
Adding to their fearsome reputation is the fact that they are only visible to those who have witnessed and accepted death. They are gentle creatures, unless threatened, and they can be tamed and will carry riders loyally and quickly to their destinations. In fact, according to Hagrid, thestrals are highly intelligent and can understand their rider's speech. They can even distinguish friend from foe, going so far as to occasionally protect their human riders. They communicate with each other through shrill yells.
They are common in England, and Hagrid is probably the first person to have bred thestrals.
The Elder Wand contains thestral tail hair in its core, which gives it its incredible power. They are a bit like sharks, because they can sense blood from miles away. And most useful to Harry, they have a perfect sense of direction.
The Ministry rates them XXXX.

The name may have already given it away, but this is another Greek mythology slot to add to your Ancient History collection. This time we travel to Mount Olympus itself to meet the gods. Much like humans, they can also be inspiring and lively enjoying a little bit of wine when they want and playing around when they need it.

Kronos is known for being one of the first gods to set this whole thing up. The father of Zeus and the most feared Titan of them all, in this video slot you actually want him to be on your side because as a wild symbol, stacked up well, he can give you as much as 100 free spins.

Review & Experience

The 5 reels and 20 pay lines of this video slot are beautifully ornate on the background of Mount Olympus cloudy sky and the winning combinations can be collected both left to right and the other way around. The theme of Greek mythology is depicted also through the symbols including those of many mythical gods and creatures such as Kronos himself and his throne, Pegasus and some bracelets and temples to follow with card suits.

This WMS online slot has the distinctive software style of other WMS games. Regardless, WMS does have some great products full of innovative solutions for players both online and offline. If there is a provider whose games you want to keep playing, WMS are definitely the ones.

Gameplay & Bonus Features

While the winning combinations may be collected both ways, a player is required to spin for over 3 matching symbols for a reward. The wild symbol of the game is the lion with scatters embodied in the gold medallion. While they can appear only on certain reels, the stacked symbols feature so to say makes up for this as it increases the number of winning combinations a gambler can get.

The bonus even to play for here is the free spins. Having played for 3 gold medallions on a spin, we were able to finally unlock it. We did try it in practice mode first, not to waste too much money. We also learned that the more medallions, the bigger the reward. For 10 spins you need 3, for 25 you need 4, and for 100 you need 5. We weren’t able to collect a total of 5 even in demo mode, but there are examples on the Internet of winners who got luckier. Remember though, spinning for fun is great, but you need to switch to real bets if you want to actually collect some winnings.

Besides, everything we did not collect increases your chances of spinning for it. After all, that’s how statistics and random number choices work – some win and some lose. Hopefully, you’ll be among the first.

Summary

While the Kronos may seem a bit simple at first glance, but it does have some wins to unlock. Remember to try to stay on the right side of the gods and perhaps they will smile upon you favorably and grant you some lucky spins. If you read this review, then you already know their names, so we’d say you are off to a good start.
